I really enjoy the 3. 5e psionics system and the Dreamscarred Press’ take on said system for the Pathfinder RPG. Do you use psionics in your games? Give me your psionics tales and gut reactions. I’m back to running 1E, and I always used psionics in the past and am using them now. I just re-booted him as an NPC for the game I’m running actually. Worth picking up, I could certainly email you the details of the matrixes if you’re interested and don’t have a copy. CP2020 that had lots of potential but was a bit kludgy. Rolesmaster was probably one of the better treatments except that I always felt that it was ofeten very much like the other two domains.
Trying to mentally scan my bookshelves and I’m running out of the ability to do so. I have never had much success with using them in-game. In attempting to make them different from arcane magic, all of the various systems I have seen and used are just too powerful. For example, I played a 1e Psionicist from Dragon Magazine. He was so powerful that the DM felt that he needed to throw super tough monsters at the party in order to drain my character to the point of being on par with everyone else. It stopped being fun after the froghemoth decimated the party.
Though my character barely survived and killed the beast, it marked the beginning of the end of the campaign. Personally, I like the way Mutant Future handles psionics — mutations and special abilities. It doesn’t try to come up with a whole new system to explain or emulate psionics. Therefore it is simple and not overly powerful.
It is also easily adapted to all kinds of different campaigns. The other option is to simply re-skin arcane magic. I made them psychics with talents rather than spellcasters with spells. It actually works pretty well in that case.
I think if you did it with mages you’d simply end up with something that looked like a 3Eish sorcerer. They worked, they were fun, but were always lacking. Rolemaster made them just another type of caster just like 4e. I enjoy that a bit better. Star Wars d6 Jedi were amazingly pisonic. Dark Sun and even Planescape would counter that. I liked how they handled psionics, with the gimmicky but fun use of Zener cards.
